Jamaka Organic Farm and Resort
The Jamaka resort started in 1998 when the Nieuwoudt family decided to rent three chalets on the farm. A short year later, they added facilities to establish campsites along the river. Today they boast several chalets and two big campgrounds on the riverbank. They are a favourite holiday destination for those seeking and enjoying hidden gems.
Jamaka Cottages
Jamaka features several fully-equipped self-catering chalets with capacities ranging from two to sixteen people per chalet. Each chalet is equipped with modern amenities and offers spectacular views of the Cederberg mountains.
Camping at Jamaka
If you enjoy roughing it out, bring your tent or caravan, they have a big, beautiful campsite that stretches out along the river. The camping spots at Jamaka are shaded by trees and shrubs and provide a degree of shelter from sun and rain. Each site also has an electric outlet and drinkable tap water.
If you need to keep some of your things cold, there are communal fridges and freezer facilities at the Jamaka camping grounds or the office – ask the staff.
Like most campsites, the ablution facilities at the Jamak camping site are communal. A few of them are available across both camping grounds with toilets, showers, and washbasins. Check out Jamaka’s website and contact them ahead of time to confirm your camp spot’s location and the nearest facilities.
Keeping busy at Jamaka Organic Farm and Resort
While visiting Jamaka, you can engage in several outdoor and recreational activities.
Each of the two camping grounds has rockpools (forming part of the Rondegat river). The water is cold, clear, and fresh, and you may even spot indigenous fish species. Kids also enjoy some of the campsites’ smaller pools. Perfect for the hot summer months.
If you love hiking, don’t forget your shoes! There are five hiking trails to choose from, some more challenging than others. You could also stroll through the camping grounds as the surroundings are simply beautiful.
During the summery, busy holiday season, they erect a volleyball court next to the pool, and you can challenge your friends or family with a volleyball game. You can also enjoy a donkey cart ride (available during the busy holiday season). This is a fun activity, especially for kids.
Some notes:
- Gravel Road. The 20km from the N7 turn-off to Jamaka is a gravel road.
- Rough terrain. There is rough terrain driving from the main farm to the various camping spots. You might be OK with a car, but a vehicle with higher ground clearance would be better.
- No stores close by. There are no grocery stores close to Jamaka. They do stock a few items at the farm’s office building, but rather bring everything (food, drinks, etc.) you may need for a weekend away.
- Book before you go. Jamaka is a popular getaway destination, especially during peak seasons, so be sure to book your trip ahead of time.
